The right business loan helps you grab growth without starving day-to-day operations. The wrong one — too short, too expensive or mismatched to its purpose — can squeeze your cash flow for years. Here is how to choose.
Two kinds of money: working capital and term loans
Working capital funds the gap between paying suppliers and collecting from customers — stock, receivables, salaries. It usually comes as a revolving limit:
- Cash credit (CC) against stock and book debts, renewed yearly
- Overdraft (OD) on your current account
- Invoice discounting, including on TReDS platforms for MSME sellers
You pay interest only on what you draw.
Term loans fund long-term needs — machinery, a new branch, renovation — and are repaid in EMIs over 1–10 years. Match the tenure to the life of the asset: don't fund a machine that lasts 7 years with a 1-year loan, or stock that turns over in 60 days with a 5-year loan.
Secured or collateral-free?
Secured loans (against property, machinery or stock) are usually cheaper and larger. But collateral isn't always needed:
- CGTMSE — the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises guarantees eligible loans so banks can lend without collateral.
- PM Mudra Yojana — collateral-free loans for micro enterprises: Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishore (up to ₹5 lakh), Tarun (up to ₹10 lakh) and Tarun Plus (up to ₹20 lakh for borrowers who have repaid a Tarun loan).
- Unsecured business loans from NBFCs, based on turnover, GST filings and banking history.
What lenders look at
- Business vintage (often 2–3 years)
- Turnover and profitability (ITR, audited financials)
- GST returns — consistency with bank credits matters
- Banking conduct: average balances, no cheque bounces
- Credit scores — both your personal CIBIL and the business's CMR

Cash-flow tips
- Keep personal and business transactions in separate accounts.
- File GST returns on time — gaps hurt eligibility.
- Don't run your CC/OD at 100% utilisation for months; lenders read it as stress.
- Build a repayment buffer if your revenue is seasonal.
